Head Coach Josh Mitchell

Coach Mitchell graduated from Model in 2009. While at Model he played on the varsity baseball team for four years. After graduation, he attended Shorter University on a baseball scholarship for three years and then transferred to Berry College to complete his degree in Middle Grades Education.

Coach Mitchell returned to the Model community this year as a 4th-grade teacher at Johnson Elementary.  For the past four years, Coach Mitchell taught 6th and 8th-grade math in Chattooga County. While at Chattooga he held the head coaching position for the middle school softball team for four years, was the head middle school boys basketball coach for one season, and was the head baseball coach at Chattooga High School for the previous three years, reaching the postseason the last 2 of those.

Coach Mitchell and his wife, Nikki (MHS C/O 2011), are both extremely happy to be back to their home and hope to be able to give back to the community in all the ways it has helped and supported them.

Assistant Coach Gary Johnson

While Coach Johnson is no stranger to baseball, he coached baseball at Bowdon High School before coming to Model, this is his first year on the Blue Devils’ diamond. This past football season was Coach Johnson’s 14th year on the sidelines for the Blue Devils. He has coached on both sides of the ball and has served as defensive coordinator for the past six seasons. Coach Johnson has also served previously as Model’s head wrestling coach for 12 seasons, head boys and girls golf coach, head girls track coach and 8u boys basketball coach. Currently the Physical Education Department chairperson, Coach Johnson holds B.S. and Master’s Degrees from The University of West Georgia and Jacksonville State University. Coach Johnson and his wife, Kelli, have two sons, Jacob (9) and Jonah (7), who both attend Model Elementary and participate in football, basketball, and baseball.

Fun fact: Coach Johnson was a member of Rome High’s inaugural baseball team in 1993!
